Wild and wonderful

Scottish Highlands

Glencoe, Ben Nevis, Loch Ness and the long empty roads of Wester Ross and the far north.

Getting there

Inverness has the airport and the trains; Fort William sits at the other end of the Great Glen. The West Highland Line from Glasgow is one of the great railway journeys.

What to know

  • The North Coast 500 is a marketing route, not a road of its own — the roads it uses are ordinary single-track in places and the villages on it are small.
  • Distances take longer than the map suggests. Sixty miles of Highland road is not an hour.
  • Fuel stations can be far apart and shut on Sundays in the north-west.

Tell us where you'd go

We'll email you once when there's something worth seeing — the first cottages, in the places people asked for. No newsletter, no drip campaign, and you can say stop any time.
