A directory being built in the open

Scottish Holiday Cottages is a new independent directory of self-catering places to stay in Scotland. It is not finished, and this page says exactly where it is up to.

What's here today

  • Twelve destination pages describing what each part of Scotland is actually like, how to get there, and what catches visitors out.
  • Practical planning notes — midges, daylight, ferries, single-track roads, dogs.
  • Two lists: travellers who want to know when it opens, and owners who want to be in it.

What isn't here

No cottages. No prices, no availability, no reviews, no search over real properties and no booking. The illustrations on the home page are drawings of kinds of place, not properties we have — that is deliberate. A directory with invented listings would be worse than an empty one, and you would find out the moment you tried to book.

There is no app, no accounts and no login, so nothing on the site asks you to make one.

How it's meant to work

Enquiries should reach the owner of the cottage, not a call centre and not three agencies at once. Independent places should be findable whether they are in Portree or in a glen nobody markets. Descriptions should mention the steep track and the patchy phone signal. That is the plan, written down before launch so it can be checked against later.

Who's behind it

An independent project run from Scotland. It is not an agency, a booking platform or a travel company, and it doesn't take money from anyone to rank them — because there is nothing to rank yet. Email hello@scottishholidaycottages.co.uk and a person reads it.

The photography on this site is other people's work, used under Creative Commons licences and credited below. None of it shows a property we list, because we don't list any yet — the images are of the places themselves.
