Britain's largest national park: high plateau, ancient pinewood, Speyside distilleries and Aviemore at the middle of it.
Getting there
The A9 runs through it — about two and a half hours from Edinburgh or Glasgow to Aviemore. Trains from both cities and from Inverness stop at Aviemore and Kingussie.
What to know
- It is the coldest, snowiest corner of the country. Winter here is a real winter, with skiing at Cairn Gorm, Glenshee and the Lecht.
- Loch Morlich, Rothiemurchus and Glenmore give you forest and water without needing to be a hillwalker.
- The high plateau is serious mountain ground in any season — check the mountain weather forecast, not the town one.
