Getting there
Ferries from Ullapool to Stornoway, Uig on Skye to Tarbert or Lochmaddy, and Oban to Castlebay. Flights to Stornoway, Benbecula and Barra, where the plane lands on the beach at low tide.
What to know
- Book the ferry and the cottage together. If the crossing is cancelled for weather, everything downstream moves.
- Sunday is still quiet in parts of Lewis and Harris — assume shops, fuel and some attractions are shut.
- Beaches are Caribbean to look at and North Atlantic to swim in.
