Getting there
Oban is about two and a half hours from Glasgow by road or three by train. Ferries leave Oban for Mull, Coll, Tiree, Colonsay, Barra and South Uist.
What to know
- This is the wet side. That is why the oakwoods are full of moss and lichen — pack for it rather than hoping.
- If a ferry is part of the plan, book the car space well ahead in summer and keep the day flexible in bad weather.
- Inveraray, Loch Fyne and the Crinan Canal make good slow days when the hills are in cloud.
