Rivers, abbeys and quiet hills

Scottish Borders

The Tweed, four ruined abbeys, Abbotsford, and the Eildon hills over Melrose — an hour from Edinburgh and largely overlooked.

Getting there

The Borders Railway runs from Edinburgh to Tweedbank in under an hour. By car it is the first place you reach coming north over the border.

What to know

  • The common ridings run through the summer and are the real thing, not a show for visitors.
  • Good mountain biking at Glentress and the rest of the 7stanes trails.
  • Salmon fishing on the Tweed is booked well in advance and is not cheap.

Tell us where you'd go

We'll email you once when there's something worth seeing — the first cottages, in the places people asked for. No newsletter, no drip campaign, and you can say stop any time.
