Getting there
Aberdeen has the airport and the trains; Deeside runs west from it on the A93, about an hour to Ballater.
What to know
- Balmoral opens to visitors for part of the year only, and the dates depend on the royal calendar — check before travelling for it.
- Braemar is one of the coldest inhabited places in Britain. That is part of the appeal in winter.
- The castle trail is a real day out if the weather is against the hills.
