Scotland in miniature
Arran & Ayrshire
An island with a Highland half and a Lowland half an hour from the mainland, and Burns country, links golf and Culzean behind it.
Getting there
Ferry from Ardrossan to Brodick, with a train from Glasgow to the ferry terminal. Around two hours door to door from the city.
What to know
- Goatfell is a proper hill day; the string road and the coast road make an easy circuit by car or bike.
- Ferry disruption is the thing that spoils Arran trips — leave slack at both ends.
- Ayrshire has more open links golf than anywhere outside Fife and East Lothian.
